Answers:

Q
What is codeCauldron?
A
CodeCauldron is a directed, open source community organized specifically for the development of the next-generation of adaptive, evolvable enterprise-class distributed systems based on service-oriented component technology. More information can be found at www.codeCauldron.org.

Q
Why is codeCauldron different from other open source communities?
A
As a directed community, codeCauldron is not a 'sand box' for a wide range of often unrelated projects. To ensure the projects enrich the overall value of the aggregate technology base, codeCauldron members are focused on delivering enterprise-class technology that conforms both to a well-defined standard for service-oriented enterprise component technology and also to an overall direction established by the community.

Q
What are the goals of codeCauldron?
A

CodeCauldron operates with two fundamental goals:

  1. to build a vibrant community that can meet the emerging market demands for a wide range of 'enterprise components'- technology, business and application - that can be deployed on an adaptable, evolvable and resilient distributed software platform, and
  2. to create a 'shared success, shared reward' community model that attempts to correct some of the imbalances in financial reward distribution across the open source software communities.

Q
How do 'enterprise components' compare to other component technologies?
A
Components developed in the codeCauldron community must comply with a component model based on the OSGi™ Service Platform standard. Unlike other component technologies which are largely desktop-oriented or earlier attempts at server-side components such as Java Beans, codeCauldron enterprise components uniquely meet the demanding requirements for dynamic component deployment and remote management in a continuously operating, secure, service-based environment. For more detailed information about the technical features of the OSGi service platform and component model, see: www.osgi.org/osgi_technology/index.asp?section=2.

Q
Is codeCauldron just a venue for Paremus open source products?
A
No. While the distributed service framework ( Newton ) developed and contributed by Paremus is the initial project on codeCauldron, the objective is to seed the community with the foundation for deploying codeCauldron enterprise components. Other community members, individuals or companies, are encouraged to assist in the development of new releases of Newton but, more importantly, to develop a wide range of new technology and business components that enrich the overall value of the framework to enterprise users.

Q
Is codeCauldron a 'captive' open source software community for Paremus?
A
While Paremus is prime sponsor of the initial resources to launch the community, contributing its distributed service framework as the foundation project ( Newton ) and establishing the initial direction for codeCauldron, the plan is for non-Paremus community members to actively participate in guiding the community activity. For details on how to get actively involved in the codeCauldron community please see www.codecauldron.org/FAQ.

Q
Why should open source developers join codeCauldron?
A
All the usual benefits of being a member of a dynamic, open source community advancing the state-of-the-art in adaptive, distributed systems technology will accrue to members. Beyond that, codeCauldron is pioneering a "shared success, shared reward" model for community members through its affiliation with the Paremus Enterprise Component Marketplace. This marketplace offers codeCauldron community members an optional commercial distribution, marketing and support channel for their components. Please see the Enterprise Component Marketplace for further details.
